Is - is Alis about to cry?

Edit: So what Alis said in the first panel would mean that she is considered healthy enough. Can we have some hope? Somehow I don't dare to.

She's more or less an emergency case at the moment. She's not really in great surgical condition, so her chances are less than nominal, especially for a major organ replacement surgery with extreme complications, ie. the xvt remnants.

Thing is, even if the surgery is successful, she's still not in good condition for a proper recovery. Not to get into gory detail but major chest surgery is highly invasive. Thats multiple months of painful recovery, even for someone who's in relatively good condition.

I'm still confused as to what happened since the boat incident.. I assumed she was finally getting the surgery because of one too many close calls with no patches, but it seems like a lot of time has passed and she's gone all skeletal.. moreso. If it was immediately afterwards I'd understand all the extra patches, but if it's not, that indicates maybe her condition got worse?

It hasn't been a long time. Sean's friends said they had only been dating their respective boys for about a week and a half. And diving was on sundays iirc. Possibly saturdays. So one can assume it's only been a few days.

Her deteriorating condition has been hinting at. One major instance just a few pages earlier is Sean requesting Alis eats more. Fully wrapping her hand around Alis' forearm. That's usually not a good sign of health, even with size differences. Alis has literally burnt through what little fat she had *before* scrub diving from the use of her patches. Now with the added calories burned she has likely burned whatever muscle and other tissue her body could. This isn't even accounting for the fact that essentially, Alis has no lungs and is living off of nanomachines scrubbing oxygen into her cells. I doubt a condition like that is intended for long periods, like people with electronic hearts nowadays. It's a temporary solution over an infected wonder. It can only get worse.

Her emergency status is likely from Leio taking her oxygen patch. We've never been told how bad her ingury is. But using studies from real life, it only takes four minutes without oxygen to potentially cause brain damage. So let's say Cara took five minutes to wake up. That's a long amount of time for an already sick Alis to be without her scrubbers. Also who knows what that does to the tissue melting bacteria possibly still in her lungs.

Dunno about Alis, but I sure am about to cry.

> But using studies from real life, it only takes four minutes without oxygen to potentially cause brain damage.

Huh, only 4 Minutes? I had somewhat around 15 minutes in mind, counting from the point where no further oxygen is provided, as in, person stopped breathing. Or is that: 4 minutes after the heart stopped pumping blood through the brain?

> So let's say Cara took five minutes to wake up. That's a long amount of time for an already sick Alis to be without her scrubbers.

But - Alis was fully awake all the time, at least AFAIR. Running low on oxygen in her blood but conscious and even able to move. Unless you mean a time between the pages.

View of course would know for sure, but I think oxygen deprivation is the wrong path here; it's not that without scrubbers she runs out of oxygen. It's that without scrubbers, her diminished lung capacity leads to a buildup of co2 and eventual respiratory acidosis. Basically, her blood ph gets thrown way off, and that state of acidosis ends up damaging her lungs even more.

That'd also explain why she's so thin; her body would basically be in a continual state of ketoacidosis, much like in those fad atkins type diets.

Most of you are right!

If it matters, it's in the same world as NMtG, but considerably earlier.

It should also be noted that even though her lungs are ruined, that they may still produce *some* beneficial effect.

It's not unusual for a human bodypart to still be working at a vastly reduced effect.
Still, I agree that her condition is probably not *just* due to one thing, but rather a string of cumulative effects finally catching up with her.

earlier? okay that explains a lot. I remember you saying same universe but I seriously thought it was later (I forget why, but I was somehow sure of it), and was wondering why everything seemed so much less futuristic.

The tension is killing me. How many pages until the surgery?

Sean is doing a brilliant job at being nothing but supportive and loving. I feel like she knows something we don't... Either that or she is a master at hiding her concern, for the sake of Alis' sanity. What an endearing story.

Maaaaaaaan there is some hardcore foreshadowing going on here. All the extra details you don't notice until it's too late. View, this is awesome AND it's killin' me!.

So after finishing Space Pulp I'm finally current and I'm so excited to see where this comic goes! This is slightly more porny than I expected tho...

As I go back and read NMtG while I wait for this story to unfold I'm curious if this is in the same world?
Sheela edit delete reply
Sheela
AFAIK it is the same world as NMtG.

Did View ever confirm that or was that something we just collectively went with?
WhiteAier (Guest) edit delete reply
Confirmed as far as I know. What with the big melt and View saying no characters crossed over from NMtG.
Lyon edit delete reply
Lyon
View, Can you confirm if the disaster referenced that affected Alis is the same one in NMtG or are they separate worlds?

Miao
Making me cry, View.
