Yeah, I find that a medium-gray back surface is much better to work with than the standard paper white for most projects. The medium gray tone brings out colors in a way white or black mediums cannot.

Although, black is my favorite medium to draw on, as it brings out a feel of mood and mystery.

I'm no good at moods, but I do like darker backgrounds sometimes. When I was a kid, I hated them because they got ink all over everything.

Vacuum uses "irony", it is not very effective.
Sean uses "honesty", Vacuum is not impressed.
