... The more I focus on NOT being muddy, the muddier things get. I'll figure it out!

TRY TO MAKE IT AS MUDDY AS POSSIBLE. It's crazy enough to work!

What the devil is your avatar from?
Lee M edit delete reply
Lee M
It's from a piece by Taral Wayne (colorized by me).

(April 30 2015 edit: For the benefit of anyone trawling the archive, the discussion concerning my old avatar is no longer valid. My new avatar is me as a humanoid honeybee, by Ed Kline of the NSFW webcomic Nightshade the Merry Widow.)

Ah heh ... was it the fraggles bit ?

And yeah, furaffinity can be dangerous to ones childhood.
Hentai Foundry can be dangerous too.

Sooooo much Rule 34 around on those sites. XD

Taral's stuff is pretty tame compared to some. Take my avatar - just an innocent picture of a guy getting turned to stone with a hard-on... yeah, thought I'd better crop that bit. Pictorially, that is.

From a daily reader's perspective... what do you even mean by muddy?

As far as putting so much focus into it, why? Keep it simple.

I mean that the page doesn't read easily - the various characters and actions don't pop well enough.

The problem is that I normally make the characters either brighter or darker than the background to make them pop, but in this comic I have a mix of darker and lighter skins.

Maybe as an artist that's your focus but for me, as a reader, what I focus on in any given panel are things that are sharper or more detailed as well as the dialogue.

For example, Panel 1 Cara is dancing while Guy#3 records it. Panel 3 I see two groups of characters: Alis and Sean, and Cara and the boys. In group one we have dialogue, with group 2 we have a girl and two guys possibly laughing and having fun with smiles on their faces.

The action with Cara is secondary here with less defined facial expressions compared to Alis and Sean's dialogue in Panels 2 and 3.

I know that you see it, but the problem is how many moments it takes to see it.

Well, the situation itself is kinda muddy.

Sort of like those movies where they try to show young people at a party often gets "muddy", so they have the protagonist + love interest walk out on the quiet backporch to have a heart to heart discussion. That way the instuctor can keep both the party setting, while also having the intimacy of a one-on-one discussion. Or they have the protagonist monologuing to the screen, and keep everything blurred in the background.

I suspect someone in the movie business even wrote a book on the subject, from a cinematography standpoint.

Your right, actually. The series Every Frame a Painting on YouTube is pretty amazing for this. For exmaple:

Just a warning, there are tons of spoilers in his cinematography breakdowns.

Is Mr. Black Bikini Bottom poking out the top there?

Sure seems so, but then he probably is pretty excited about the whole situation.

And alis has red ears, I think. :)

Hmm, it seems to read easily enough IMHO. It's a difficult thing to show, for certain.

alis's face in the first couple of panels reminds me of salad fingers.
